In Shutter Island, he reunites himself with old favourite and accomplished actor; Leonardo Di Caprio. Di Caprio has starred in several of Scorsese’s movies with their first outing together being Gangs of New York. It is clear the two like to work with each other and it is partnerships such as these that tend to make great movies. It is no different here.

Di Caprio shines as the somewhat unstable U.S Marshal Teddy Daniels sent on a mission to Shutter Island, which holds a large complex of buildings that house the mentally ill, to discover the fate of an escaped patient. He is supported admirably by the always brilliant Ben Kingsley and . Set in the 1950’s the costume department did themselves proud, faithfully recreating the era with some fantastic details.

There is plenty to keep anyone entertained throughout this movie. Although action scenes are rare, there is plenty of suspense and tension that help the movie flow. The eerie surroundings of Shutter Island and the mental institution are true highlights in this movie and help to set the mood and tone right from the off.

There are a fair few twists and turns and a few ’jump-out-of-your-seat'moments also. The storytelling, sets, design, cast and crew all combine to create one of 2010’s best movies yet and probably one of the best movies this year will see. Scorsese and Di Caprio once again shows off their talents and create a genuine thriller with Shutter Island.

Women are the absolute best, aren’t they? They can do so many things better than men: want proof? Well, they can do five things at once where men can only do two quite badly—an unfortunate scientific fact–—they can wink in a way which no man will ever be able to compete with and well–as far as smiling and giggling goes I defy any man who says that their smile will get them out of a parking fine–

And they can dance. Yep, you must have noticed this lads: women can dance amazingly, and it matters not in the least if their moves are terrible—just as terrible as the men, even—they are amazing anyway. What else?

1) Women look great while angry. Grr! When they get really angry and scream there’s something sexy about that. Providing that you’re far enough away that your ears didn’t just explode–

2) Women can write great. Yes, I am yet to meet a woman who can write truly badly; far as that goes men have the monopoly, I think. Even if you do find a woman who can write badly, you won’t be looking at the writing, so it won’t matter, will it?

3) Women can’t run, and why is that good? Well, it isn’t, but at least when they run a certain part of their anatomy which has a life of its own wobbles a la Baywatch. This more than makes up for it.

4) Women can put their hands on their hips and look incredibly sexy. What chance does a man have to do the same?

5) Women can smoke and look like movie goddesses, without even trying, hand held high, a look of class about them. A man will have a smoke while scratching a certain part of his anatomy, which just isn’t the same thing at all–

People make such a fuss about finding women, keeping women, generally anything to do with women, don’t they? I learned a long time ago that finding women is exceedingly easy—all you have to do is think like a woman. Ever since I started doing that my phone has been off the hook!

But it’s obviously not just thinking like a woman, of course–this would be the amateurs philosophy, and as we all know if you want to achieve any greatness in this world then you must become an out and out professional; you have to walk, talk, act, chat, peruse the web and throw like a woman too—otherwise you’re just not going to be perceived as absolutely authentic.

I suggest you do this behind clothes doors; preferably closed doors and windows, and you may also want to check that the phone isn’t bugged, because that can put a serious downer on proceedings. Also refrain from telling anyone–I mean anyone, even fellow people who are doing the same thing as you. Trust me, you can’t trust people, not even women! It is a lonely life, this, but it is also the only life I now know and I wouldn’t have it any othe way.

Ever since my humble beginnings—a couple of hours a week being a woman—I have never once looked back. It began as a mild fascination, and now it is a way of life. After some time I decided to shift it up a gear; so I started to take a full day off a week and devote myself more fully.

How would us guys cope all alone on this big rock of ours?

One thing which I never would have guessed in my wildest dreams, growing up, is that women are, at least in my experience, the best half of our species to watch scary films with; I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve sat down to watch a DVD with a male mate–usually one who does macho things which don’t interest me in the slightest–only to hear him say, as if he’s not at all frightened, “Er–Can we watch something else? I’m just not in the mood for a comedy, that’s all.”

That’s got me thinking…

Also, how dull would weddings be without those glorious dresses? Those sweet smiling bridesmaids? Actually–would weddings even take place? I suppose, sad as it may be, if women didn’t exist then all men–even rugby players–would have to get married to each other (even if they didn’t like men, what other choice would there be?): oh dear oh dear. Truly an awful prospect: I’d give my right arm not to see another man all done up in a big white wedding dress any day…

What is it with the opposite sex? We are so unbelievably different and yet we seek each other out constantly so we can annoy and frustrate each other. Yet there is nothing better than relaxing with a loved one or having that massive adrenaline rush when you enter a new relationship.

Women are so different and perhaps it is because of that, that we want to be with them. They say that opposites attract and, with men and women dating and marrying, it certainly proves that rule. It is well documented that at their most basic level women find the protection and safety a man can offer very attractive and that men want an attractive woman who can provide children. Even in today’s world, those two fundamental reasons for attraction still hold true.

Why are women so great? And why do we throw away our dignity in the pursuit of them? Men are often making fools of themselves or becoming the butt of their friend’s jokes over a woman and yet we gladly do it. It is because, as close as we are to our male friends, we can never truly be ourselves. The male world is too competitive to give away everything about yourself.

Men are also, more often than not, terrible at listening to, and providing solutions to, emotional problems. We can be vulnerable in front of women and that is incredibly appealing, even if we don’t like to say it. Men also like to be appreciated, and women show this better than men. Being funny in front of your girlfriend is twice as fulfilling as being funny in front of the guys.

Let’s face it, we also like the way women look. An attractive woman with a great body is something to behold and we will take that over virtually anything else. The human body is a wonderful thing, this is especially the case if that body is willing to sleep with you.

So here is to women, I salute you all. Despite the frustrations and annoyances you bring, you also blow us away and give us a chance to be ourselves and feel totally relaxed.

Just came across this contest where the prize is spending some time with your favourite lady at one of five chalets. How great would it be to win this prize? I think I will need to find someone to charm if I get it, volunteers welcome!

The way I ended up watching NINE on the big screen was probably similar, if not identical, to the likes of many other unfortunate and gullible men: a trustworthy friend called, explained that he was going to the cinema to watch a number of extremely famous, scantily clad women prance about the stage for two whole hours (women who men the world over have been waiting to see in such risqué attire since almost the last ice-age; including Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz and Kate Hudson, and accompanied by the acting hall-marks of Daniel Day Lewis, screen legend Sophia Loren and Dame Judi Dench) and I said ‘that sounds good to me, how can’t it be any good?’…Even though, like so many men, I am genetically incapable of appreciating a good musical, even if it smacks me in the face.

As it turned out, the money was a waste and would have been better spent given to a beggar, something I’m sure to keep in mind the next time I consider heading to the cinema for the latest Hollywood blockbuster: NINE did nothing to my genes, nor did it alter my opinion on musicals or contribute in any way to what might be perceived as valuable entertainment; more troubling than anything was that the sight of so much female flesh in no way contributed to the overall quality of the film—if anything it only made plain how far off the publics’ fascination with looks over personality is from fading away and being won over by things more ethical.

In a time of epic natural disasters, terrorist threats and large-scale famine,

NINE made me wonder how any studio—or, as it happens, industry machine boasting such global financial clout—can reasonably justify wasting such vast amounts of money when the rest of the world is falling to pieces and in dire need of cash for so much more important things.

Women are such wonderful creatures for so many different reasons.

If you are a man it is really nice to spend time in the company of a woman. It gets a bit boring sitting around with other men because a lot of the time all they want to talk about are the same old things; football, cars, which women they have slept with (or say they have). If you enjoy talking about these things then it is okay, but if it bores you silly then it can rapidly become rather tedious.

When you talk to a woman there is no stupid macho pretence to maintain (although, if it is a lady that you fancy then you will need to keep up a certain image, I suppose). You are free to sit about all kinds of different things without being in fear of other men thinking you are a wuss. All men have got a bit of the feminine in them and it is nice to be able to tap into it sometimes.

The other bonus about sitting and talking to women is that they are pretty. You are able to look at them and think about what nice eyes or hair they have whilst you are talking together. This is rather different to sitting and having a natter with Dave from the local rugby team…

Many women have got a naturally caring streak; I suppose it is all to do with the maternal thing. But the magic of this is that all men (if they are honest) enjoy being ‘mothered’ now and again. Why is it that we men are so fond of women?

There seems to be quite a lot of reasons… Let’s get the obvious one out of the way first and get any naughty giggling over and done with. Sex! Yes, we all love to have sex and it would seem that a lot of men fantasise about what it would be like with ‘so and so’. This (I assume) is completely normal and it is just part of the male DNA. Much of the time, a man will get just as much pleasure from the seduction of a woman as he will from finally doing the ‘wild thing’ with her.

But there is a little bit more to it all than that (thank goodness) and men find women appealing for several other reasons. Some of us males are more in tune with our feminine side and enjoy a bit of romance; a woman’s mere company can be absolute heaven. If you are lucky enough to find a lady who you can connect with on an intellectual level then it can be even better than sex.

Another part of it all is the protective thing. Men love to ‘rescue’ ladies. Women can get a lot of pleasure from this, but it can also drive them nuts! If a man is too protective they will feel as if he thinks they are useless.

Perhaps we are ultimately attracted to women because they represent the missing part of ourselves. I would say that most men are primarily masculine with a smidgen of the feminine. If we can find a compatible someone who is the opposite to this then we are going to end up feeling ‘complete’.

Above all else, when we find a mate, they will become the most important thing in our life. They will have many roles such as; lover, carer, friend and companion. When a relationship has so many wonderful facets it is difficult to think that it can ever go wrong!

It is extremely important that men have got women to look at, think about and talk to. If this was not the case then all sorts of areas would be affected.

There are the obvious things, of course, such as the wonder of falling in love, the enjoyment of intimacy and the magic of creating a life together; but there is a lot more to it than that.

Without women in the world there would be far fewer poems, novels and films. A lot of people say that they do not enjoy love stories, but the truth of it is that nearly all of us do. They can be presented in a variety of different forms that appeal to us in different ways.

Think about all of the classic songs from the last fifty years. Most of these are about your love for a woman, the loss of a woman or a woman that has hurt you. Women make up a huge percentage of musical creativity. Even most of the songs in the charts today are still about a woman in one way or another.

So, if women were not here then we would have far less music. Art would suffer as well. There has been many a painter to have tried to capture a woman’s beauty in a picture.
